Materia 004 [accidental video; video; action]

[The Vine seems to think that what Sephiroth is doing is interesting enough to start transmitting. She is turned away from the mirror. Standing in a loose and easy stance, she gestures with one hand. Suddenly, the air around her fills with a shower of what appear to be pies. Small and dense, a few of them strike Sephiroth's head and pauldrons. In a cascade of crumbs, they harmlessly bounce off of her and onto the ground. Sephiroth takes a step back, bewildered, and the Vine stops recording.

When it starts recording again, several minutes later, Sephiroth is aware of it, addressing the Vine in her usual calm way. She is holding three spherical objects.]

Hello. This is Sephiroth. Using the magic soil that can be found here, I attempted to make some items from my world known as Materia, and my experiment had--mixed results.

[Sephiroth makes a hand motion with one of the spheres, and as she does so, a dazzling rainbow shoots out. It seems to have no end, spanning the gardens with a bow of beautiful colors for a bright few moments.]

This is Rainbow Materia.

[Sephiroth repeats her earlier move, using another sphere. A few feet in front of her, a tree springs up from the ground. It grows very rapidly, until it is more than six feet tall, at which point it puts out leaves, then buds, then bursts into bloom. The flowers are pink and purple, and they expel puffs of glitter as they open.]

This is Tree Materia.

[She considers the third sphere, but makes no move to use it.]

This last one is Pie Materia. [Pause.] It creates a rain of pies. [She nods toward the ground, where one can see a liberal scattering of pies. A trace of annoyance can be detected in her voice and expression.]

These are all quite useless to me. If anyone so desires, I'd be happy to give you one of these materia and instruct you in its use.

[She holds up one of the spheres.] This. It is Materia. However, there are various kinds. Different types of Materia allow their users to manipulate the natural world in different ways.

These Materia did not have the effect I desired, but I suppose they are functional Materia, of a sort. [Though she sounds distinctly unimpressed.]

The effects you desired were more direct. [A small pause, thinking on the right wording, and she smiles ever so slightly, because the rain of pies was a strange image.] Less playful.

[She had heard Tifa's warning, and is reserving judgement in some ways, but also trying to understand the strength of Sephiroth's abilities.]

Well, that last one could be useful for parties or something. The tree one would be more useful if we didn't have trees all over.

Yes, they're quite useless. Unless perhaps there's a child here who wants a colorful toy. [With a small smirk, she sarcastically shoots another rainbow--if one can be said to sarcastically shoot rainbows.]

[However, she soon brightens.] Fortunately, my attempt to create healing and defensive items for you was far more successful.

[Sephiroth smiles. She doesn't require impressed reactions, but that's not to say that she doesn't appreciate them.]

I made them so that they will function that way for anyone who wishes to use them, with a little practice and concentration.

[She smiles. She is somewhat pleased by the positive reaction to her Materia, even though they were technically a failed experiment. Perhaps failed experiments can yet be a kind of success.]

If you'd like the Pie Materia, you may have it, Larry. So far, it's only made apple pies, but I'm not sure if it depends on the preference of the user.

It wasn't my intention to make anything of the kind, but the magic of the Gardens warped some of my attempts, creating--well, these aren't quite the same as ordinary Materia, but they're very similar.

I think the rather childish nature of this place might have had an effect on them.

There is a kind of soil here that one can use to create things. Apparently, people have been using it to make quite complex things from their worlds, such as residences.

It might not be magic so much as a power that we're unfamiliar with, like the power that brought us here. I think most people default to calling it magic because it's not something they understand.

[How best to explain it?] Materia aren't exactly weapons, but they can be used in combat, and they have various applications.

I see. Were you able to to create weapons by making the parts separately and then assembling them? [Materia aren't so much assembled as formed, and she needs no more weapons, but she's curious.]
