[The Vine seems to think that what Sephiroth is doing is interesting enough to start transmitting. She is turned away from the mirror. Standing in a loose and easy stance, she gestures with one hand. Suddenly, the air around her fills with a shower of what appear to be pies. Small and dense, a few of them strike Sephiroth's head and pauldrons. In a cascade of crumbs, they harmlessly bounce off of her and onto the ground. Sephiroth takes a step back, bewildered, and the Vine stops recording.

When it starts recording again, several minutes later, Sephiroth is aware of it, addressing the Vine in her usual calm way. She is holding three spherical objects.]

Hello. This is Sephiroth. Using the magic soil that can be found here, I attempted to make some items from my world known as Materia, and my experiment had--mixed results.

[Sephiroth makes a hand motion with one of the spheres, and as she does so, a dazzling rainbow shoots out. It seems to have no end, spanning the gardens with a bow of beautiful colors for a bright few moments.]

This is Rainbow Materia.

[Sephiroth repeats her earlier move, using another sphere. A few feet in front of her, a tree springs up from the ground. It grows very rapidly, until it is more than six feet tall, at which point it puts out leaves, then buds, then bursts into bloom. The flowers are pink and purple, and they expel puffs of glitter as they open.]

This is Tree Materia.

[She considers the third sphere, but makes no move to use it.]

This last one is Pie Materia. [Pause.] It creates a rain of pies. [She nods toward the ground, where one can see a liberal scattering of pies. A trace of annoyance can be detected in her voice and expression.]

These are all quite useless to me. If anyone so desires, I'd be happy to give you one of these materia and instruct you in its use.

[[OOC: Sephiroth has one each of the following Materia: Rainbow, Tree, and Pie. They won't level up, and they only behave as demonstrated. If anyone wants one, they're first come, first serve! Or feel free to just bug Sephiroth in general. (If she has any other Materia, she's not saying.)]]

[She nods.]

I've heard something of it, but I haven't been to find any of my own yet. It is interesting to imagine what the limitations on such a substance could be.

From what I understand, you can use the soil to make almost anything that you're familiar with in your world. Based on what I've seen, people commonly use it to recreate buildings from home.

I did want to push the limits of the substance and see what's possible.

[She pauses.] I haven't spoken to you before. What's your name?

Understandable, being in a strange place. But perhaps a little short-sighted, considering the potential.

Dominique de Tisi. I only arrived here a short while ago.

People do have a strong craving for the familiar, but it is not short-sighted to construct a residence if you require shelter. [Her tone is thoughtful.] I myself am wary of any "gifts" from the queen, but I was quite curious. Perhaps a gifted scientist or engineer could make full use of the soil's potential.

I am pleased to meet you, Dominique. I have not been here long myself.

I meant only if they kept to replicating what they already knew, rather than trying to create something from the imagination.

[A soft smile. Her thoughts go completely the opposite to Sephiroth's.]

I would look to see it in the hands of a storyteller, a dreamer. Although perhaps, without technical knowledge, the constructions would not last.

[She nods.] I take your meaning, and that would open up fascinating possibilities, but it's my understanding that one can only make things one is already familiar with from one's own world.

Which is why I think an engineer or scientist might have the best luck with testing its limits. They can be dreamers, can they not? I know of an engineer who is building a floating city, something my world has never seen before.

Were you familiar with this rain of pies, before?

[She's teasing, a little, although it might be hard to tell, considering how muted all of her expressions are.]

I do not have much experience with engineers. We did not build, where I am from. Only salvaged. [A slight tilt of her head.] A floating city sounds very strange, and wonderful.

No. Not exactly. [Her tone is a bit wry.] Sometimes the Gardens alters creations in its own way, if it wishes. [She pauses, considering something she had not considered before.] I have been thinking of apples, lately.

Engineers can create entirely new things without magic soil. The City of Midgar is a technological marvel. [The idea of not building at all is odd to her, and she's curious.] What did you salvage? Did you live among the remains of an earlier civilization?

Perhaps you had more effect than you realised.

A war zone. 'Military controlled fascist state', if those words are familiar to you. We lived in the remains, the buildings left standing. I do not know if 'an earlier civilization' is right. I was born before the war came, though I do not have any memories of that time.

I must have. As the soil seems to depend on our thoughts, we should be careful of what we think while we use it.

I do understand. I come from a time of war as well, but the situation is nowhere near as extreme, and the war will soon be over. [She can say this confidently, because SOLDIER is involved.]

I will keep that in mind.

That is fortunate. The war in my world has been ongoing for many years. There is no end in sight.

[She takes a moment to consider the concept of a seemingly endless war. She nods, and her tone when she speaks again is curious, but sober and respectful. Matters of war interest her, but she takes them quite seriously.]

My own purpose is to end war. How is your war being waged? Are you involved in the fighting?

[No one has ever asked her to explain that before, and she takes a long moment, thinking over how to tell years of history. What to tell, what should perhaps be left out.]

Between witches and those that would see all witches dead. The witches and their supporters, they drove the Hunters back, but there was a battle that tore a rift in the world. The Hunters found a stronghold in the South, while the North remains free. The rift is difficult and dangerous to cross, so the true war has slowed.

I was part of a resistance organisation, in the South, but I travelled to the North, some years ago.

[Dominique's world is clearly quite unlike her own. She knows the term "witches", but it's not applied to actual people, only used in stories. To tear a rift in the world--what kind of power could accomplish that? It's intriguing.]

Your warriors must have powerful magic, to achieve something like that. It's a good strategy, to slow a war that cannot be won at the present time.

We do not call it magic, though I can understand it being seen as such.

[She tilts her head slightly.]

And I have heard it was an accident.

[Sephiroth nods.] In the Gardens, I use the term "magic" because it is easier for most people to understand. We come from so many different worlds with so many different types of power.

An accident? Quite a devastating one. [She inclines her head.] You have my sympathies. I can see why you would not have the opportunity to build in your world.

Yes, that's understandable.

Perhaps, when the war is won, there will be room for growth. For now, priorities rest on survival.
