She stares back for a few seconds, and then there's a hesitant:] ...Hello?

[The silence stretches a little longer, and then the eye blinks twice in rapid succession. There is a faint crunching noise when eyelashes and mirror make contact.

Possibly Anthy has chosen to communicate through morse code.

If so, she thinks better of it; a few moments later, a soft, low-pitched voice adds:]

Good morning.

[Oh.

She knows that voice, has not heard it in months. A pause, longer than the first, and she speaks again.]

Himemiya? [Her voice picks up in volume and gains an urgent edge.] Himemiya, is that you?

[Well, that's odd. Before making a real connection on the mirror, Alice first places a doll in front of said mirror, ala icon, and moves out of sight.

Hello eyeball. Meet unmoving doll. It only seems fair.]

[There is a mercifully brief, yet still awkward pause when Mami looks into the Vine's mirror and sees that magnified, unblinking pupil staring back. An instant before her composure reasserts herself and masks a faint unease, blocks the initial tugs of some dim, nagging thought.

Mami smiles politely.]

Hello there, miss. Ah, is the Vine being a nuisance? They aren't supposed to get so close....

The vine? Oh, no, it's very helpful.

[Very few plants let Anthy broadcast a creepy close-up of her eye. That experimental rosebush was a failure.]

[Mami is many things, not all of them good, but naive is not one of them: Anthy's voice, the courteous and yet empty tone of it, strikes a chord. Makes her hesitate, makes her gaze narrow just slightly. That is how Mami herself so often sounds, distant beneath the good manners, and...

...and there is something else about this that seems familiar. But what? The inkling of unease begins to slowly grow; Mami's smile doesn't falter.]

Oh, that's good. It has a history of being mischievous, you see, so I'm glad that it isn't giving you any trouble.

[She sounds as calm as though this was any normal face-to-face conversation, rather than face-to-unblinking eyeball.]

[The eye widens. And then, politely, directs its glance a few degrees downward -- about chin-level, rather than eye-level. It does not move any further from the mirror.]

[Bonnibel stared back into the vine, and blinked an inordinate amount of times to make up for the eye on the other side, which didn't seem to be blinking at all.]

She tried turning away from the vine, but having that eye there just staring, well that was just going to be unnerving. Actually, it kind of already was. Finally, she muttered under her breath.]

"What the nuts!? This is totally flipping me out!"

[For a few moments more, there is nothing but silence from the other side. Then the eye blinks.]

I'm sorry. I'm not entirely sure how this works.

[It is an ever-present danger when you read the instructions and proceed to do the opposite.]
