14th Inversion - Video

[The Vine opens a mirror to anyone passing by it to show the inside of an empty building. A place of finery, there was no movement. No sound. Nothing...

The mirror closes and a few moments later, it opens again, to show the inside of the same building, but a different place. A room untouched. A bed unmade. Trinkets around, but there was a thin layer of dust on them.

Again, the mirror closes and reopens a bit later to show the outside of this building. The gardens. They were untended, but finally there was so movement. Barely visible was a distressed looking Hoppip waving its fronds at something with cries of 'Hoppip! Hoppip!'

A voice responds, quiet but with a cruel edge to it, finally identifying the seemingly abandoned building as the Tohno Mansion.]

Your cries mean nothing to me. She's gone. They're all gone. You should leave, too, before I eat you.

[The Hoppip continues to cry out and draw close until it screams as one frond catches on fire. It flails about, putting the fire out before retreating. To the viewers of the mirror, it was hiding in the garden out of sight of Akiha.]

Go... leave.

[There's movement then as Akiha passes by the mirror, heavy streaks of vermillion running through her black hair. When she glances over at it, there is something distinctly non-human in her eyes. She narrows them, but says nothing, continuing on her way. A few seconds later, the mirror closes.]

You know I don't need it.

[ ...but power is nice, isn't it? Damn. She hasn't had a real battle-driven rush in so long. ]

All I need is you, but...

[ It's so tempting, but what would be left? Just the two of them and the ruins of this place? ]

But what? When it is ours, we will have the means to go where we want. You can come to Misaki City and stay...

[ The power to leave. To leave this place, forever, with Akiha -

But her duty. How can she abandon her world, if they need her? ]

...damn. You know... I shouldn't abandon my friends though. I mean, I want to... be with you but... shit.

[Akiha's nails dug into Katina's back ans she raised her head, hair vermilion again.]

You would leave me to go die in a war?

I'm not gonna die now. I'll kill anyone who gets in the way of me living to see you. No matter what...

[ Katina hoped that she wasn't obviously torn, though - she might die anyways. She wanted to be with Akiha.

Enough to abandon her friends, her family, her home? ]

[AKIHA's head dipped down to run her tongue over the bites on Katina's neck. The bleeding may have stopped and the blood drying, but the skin should still be sensitive.]

Can you promise me that?

[ She shivered a little, reaching a hand up to AKIHA's shoulder. It's definitely the demon. ]

I promise... in fact... I promise that one way or another, I won't die without you around...

[ Even if she's the cause. ]

[AKIHA's head comes up to bite down on Katina's ear. She doesn't draw blood, but her fangs pinch a little.]

Good. Then I may let you return to your war.

[ ...that feels good, AKIHA or Akiha. ]

...it's not a sure thing yet... but... thank you.

[The edge in her voice, though not as obvious as it was when Katina first found her, makes it easy for her to know which side of the half-demon she was dealing with.]

Do I frighten you, Katina? I won't be going away. Not this time.

[ She's gonna have to get way more used to the difference between the two. ]

I'm only worried about what kind of effect you'll have on your other half.

Perhaps she will decide things are better this way. After all, if it weren't for me, she never would've realized what exactly was stirring inside her for you. Remember that I was the one that kissed you first.

[That first mistletoe didn't count.]

She loves you... I want to kill you. Yet, I also love you and she hates you. Now, kiss me so I can hear her voice again. Otherwise, I may take your blood again. And you have not much more to give me today.

...whatever both of you decide, you're both Akiha, and I'm not gonna leave you. [ Not even if it gets her killed. No, that might... be an alright way to die compared to what could happen to a soldier. ]

'm a little light-headed. Heh.

[ Don't bleed her dry please. Katina leaned in, no hesitation, a slight grin on her lips as she pressed them against AKIHA's, kissing deeply. ]

[AKIHA liked the feel of Katina's tongue brushing against her fangs, so recklessly unafraid of getting cut on them. It was good they weren't sharp enough to draw blood that easily, because another sharp taste of copper and AKIHA would devour Katina.

Arms wrapping about her, this time it was the demon that fell into the kiss. It took a few seconds for an almost submissive whimper to come from her. Her hair darkened again and Akiha clung to Katina with shaking hands.]

[ Katina would readily admit to being reckless in that regard; no matter how much danger she was in, she kissed deeply, intensely. This was part of the woman she loved.

That sound was one of Akiha, though, and Katina eased up slightly at the sound, though she wasn't ready to pull away just yet. ]

[It came again, the whimper, and a shaking hand moved up to lace into Katina's hair. Fingers curled to get a grip, but she only pulled a little. It was Akiha who pulled back from the kiss. Her breathing was hard and her eyes stayed closed.]

...I'm so tired, Katina. It hurts... Make it stop hurting.

I wish I knew how.

[ Because if she had some idea of what to do, she'd do it in a heartbeat. She'd kill, she'd die, she'd betray any boundaries they'd wanted set between them, all in a heartbeat.

None of that is going to help though. ]

But I'll do anything you want me to.

I can't-- [Akiha's body tensed up, sweat beading on her forehead as she pressed it against Katina.]

b-breathe.

[She struggled for air as her hand pulled. This happened once before with Katina around. Someone had let the demon out for too long.]

My room.

[ Shit. Another one of these attacks, a weakness that Akiha had tried so hard to keep private.

Akiha's light, and Katina's strong, and despite her wooziness from blood loss, she can rely on adrenaline and instinct to keep her upright. She cradles Akiha against herself, moving quickly through the mansion, focus wholly on doing what Akiha asked of her. ]

Almost there. Just hold on.

[This was the problem with being half-demon. Yes, her blood was strong and it made her powerful, but the strain of it on her body... Every hybrid had some health issue that stemmed from it. Her brother and father's manifested as mental health issues. Hers was dyspnea.

She nodded and held on as best as she could, struggling to breath as it felt like iron bands wrapping about her chest. With no one in the mansion and doors left open or unlocked, the worst Katina had to deal with was navigating the steps up to Akiha's room.

...she idly wondered if the attacks scared Katina more than they scared Akiha. She wasn't sure which would be worse, losing herself completely to the demon like she expected, or suffocating to death because of her blood.]

[ What would Akiha be like without this? Without having to fight against something that was an integral part of her, without having to worry about being suffocated by the strain of something she didn't really want?

Whatever. She's suffering now. Katina's not sure what she can do, other than being there for Akiha, but she's not going to let her just... die suffocating like this, and she moves more quickly through the mansion than ever before, praying that she isn't making it worse by jostling her as she pushes into Akiha's room. ]

Bed?

Yessssssssssssssssss.

[She gets the hissing breath out with effort. Akiha normally didn't like being seen this weak, but she needed Katina there. If left alone... she might give in and let herself die. It would make the pain go away at least.

A shuddering yet shallow breath could be felt against Katina's neck. At least it was something.]

[ It's hard for Katina to rush while being gentle, but she does the best she can at it, hurrying to lay Akiha down on bed.

She's breathing. If she's breathing, then she's alive, and she's being struck by the very real worry that after all of what they just said, she might just suffocate and die like this.

That can't happen. ]

Alright, just... breathe Akiha, just focus on that.

[Laying down helped. She tilted her head back, trying to open her airway more. She knew it was pointless to do so - the problem wasn't her throat, it was the muscles of her chest seizing up - but psychologically it helped.

She groped for Katina's hand and brought it to her cheek once she found it. Her breath rattled and was shallow still, but she got some more out. Another half a minute and her muscles quivered and she went limp, hands shaking, but she was breathing mostly normal.]

S-sorry...

[ Katina was tense, and her hand shook against Akiha's cheek. All she could do was wait as Akiha focused on relaxing herself, on being able to breathe normally. There had to be something, but she was far from a doctor, and there was no one else willing or able to help with demon-induced dyspnea.

But she was fine. More or less. ]

You don't have to apologize. I'm here for you no matter what happens.
