[ Not that anyone knows where she is... or so she hopes...

No, Kris could probably find her again if she wanted. That was why she'd taken the ring off, buried it for safe keeping if she ever felt like she could get away with it again. That might help. But Subaru would take a while to find Katina on the edge of the gardens. The sorry excuse for a tent she'd put up was camouflaged, proper military style, and she'd only barely found enough to eat and drink to not fall ill or drop dead.

...a vine was poking into her tent, the sort that carried messages. She tapped it.

There was breathing, heavy breathing from the other end of the vine, probably a good minute that felt like a good year or so to Katina. No matter what happened, people deserved to know that she was alive, right? Then they could do... whatever.

More breathing. ]

I can't... I can't do this...

[ And then silence. Maybe she'll see what the Queen does if she starves a few times - any other consequences can't be that bad right? ]

[ Katina isn't okay, so that's the best answer she could give, unfortunately. ]

[ Subaru was stunned. She whispered not to hide her voice from others, but because she has this gut feeling that she won't like where this was going. ] What... do you mean? What happened, Katina?

[ Katina sighs. At this point, she owes Subaru as much, right? ]

That well that... some people were called to? Heh. I didn't take the advice.

I... know the well. [ Her heart was racing but she couldn't place why. Was it fear? Was it... anger? ] I went there, too. I talked to a lady who lived in it. [ But she was fine, right? Subaru didn't do anything unusual. That she could immediately place, anyway. ]

[ That didn't help with her tension. ] She hurt you. [ It wasn't a question. ]

[ It's what happened. People come back to life here, so she feels like it shouldn't matter - but being ripped to shreds has shaken her. A lot of things have shaken her, lately. ]

...tell me it's not true. Please. [ For all she was telling Akiha that she wouldn't hurt Katina; that she wouldn't want anything to happen to her, ever, no matter what had transpired between the three of them...

No. There is a specific plan of action that springs into her mind. That's the danger. ]

[ Destroying shit wouldn't change anything, and it's not like Katina didn't get herself into that mess. She still remembers the advice, and the opposing thoughts worming into her brain. ]

[ NO. That isn't the way, and she knows it. ] Where are you?

[ Stop worrying about her! Sheesh. ]

Edge of the gardens, forest. Not that you should come.

[ Subaru is used to people telling her what she should or should not be doing— ] I'm on my way. [ —and then, sometimes, promptly ignoring the advice. ]

[ GIRLS STOP IT you and Akiha are idiots. ]

[ Well, she'll be waiting in her tent. ]

[ "Idiot", "moron", "hot-blooded". Subaru's been called a lot of things, but "dumbass" is a new one on her. It makes her pause before she dismisses the vine, though she's already gotten dressed for the trip in the two second silence. ] I just want to make sure you're safe. I want to help. [ . . . ] Is that wrong?

[ Yeah, well, it's something Katina calls her friends half the time, even if she's not prone to using it on someone like Subaru. ]

...do whatever the hell you want.

Are you mad at me? [ It's with a quiet, desperate voice that she forces the question out. Her engines aren't even hot yet, so she could still turn back but... she doesn't want to.

Not unless— ] Do you want me to stay away?

[ If Subaru could see her face... maybe she can at least hear the incredulity in her voice. ]

Am I mad at you?

I... I don't know! I can't tell if you want me to stay away or not, so I'm asking you. [ Which is more foresight than usual, for her. ]

If I'm angry at you it's because you aren't angrier at me!

I'm not angry, Katina, I'm worried! [ Screw the relationship nonsense, KATINA DIED, and that took priority over everything else. ]

[ This is making it harder to want to throw herself in those raging rapids a little ways away. ]

...I'm alive, so don't worry.

[ There are a lot of people who have told Subaru not to worry, and it never stopped her. But never has she quite had the urge to retort before. Maybe she's just tired of having her emotions invalidated like that. Saying "don't feel guilty" doesn't erase guilt. "Don't be mad" can't make someone just flip off their switch. ] Call me selfish if you want, but that isn't good enough for me.

I'm coming. Please, wait for me.

[ She can't take this. She just wants to avoid them, and not think, and not have to worry about anything. ]

[ This might be dumb. This might top the list of dumb decisions Subaru has made. But it remains that it is something she decided and Katina didn't deny her, so she'll be headed that way in her typical, swift order.

...now if only she had thought to ask more details, she wouldn't have to be searching so hard.

Eventually, she drops down to the ground and attempts to summon the vine over so that she can call Katina back and ask for more specific directions. ]

[ Hey, it gives Katina more time to steel herself. Or maybe Subaru will have enough time to change her mind. That would be nice - running away from her problems is a good time.

She hasn't moved anywhere though. ]

[ There's very little to be done to change Subaru's mind once it has been made up. She speeds along the ground, thinking that if she can't find it near this forest, maybe there's some other place to look. But that's... something odd standing out against the line of underbrush, isn't there? ] Hello?

[ And lo, a few moments after that, a blond head pokes out from something odd. ]
