Do you have an understanding at all of moral standards?

Well, I'm a youkai, so it's to be expected that my "moral standards" are pretty different than a human's. I don't see what the problem is with hurting the person who decided to stick us all in this flowery prison, though.

It's the difference between a fight and lashing out.

You don't know what a youkai is? Hm... I guess you could say we're spirits, or maybe monsters?

[This is, of course, accompanied by a grin.]

That might be what people call are you, but what are you really? How were you created?

[undefines]

What do you mean, what am I really? I just told you. I wasn't "created" at all.

[So she assumes, anyway. She doesn't actually have any idea who or what her parents were, and she's the only one of her species that she knows of.]

Why would you think yourself a monster?

Well, I'm sure not all youkai think this way, but I don't really mind being called a monster. I mean, that's what I am. I'm a monster that terrorized humans so much that they sealed me away in fear.

That...it sounds like maybe you should accept that less and focus on what you can be instead.

[undefines]

Hm... So you're saying I should try to be less of a youkai and more of a human instead? That doesn't sound very fair. It's just natural for us to want to terrorize and massacre humans, you know.

[reverentresistance]

It doesn't sound like you're really any different from a human, other than in how you define yourself.

[undefines]

What do you mean, I don't sound any different than a human? [Her expression abruptly turns to a scowl.] A non-human is a non-human. My body is different from a human's, and there a lot of things I can do that they can't. Unless you think humans are the only ones that think and have feelings?

I don't understand...you're not an animal. You look like a human, and you said you weren't made.

[undefines]

That doesn't matter. [Her wings/tails/whatever those extra limbs sprouting from her back swish irritably, as if to emphasize her point.] There are youkai that look even more human than me, but that doesn't make them less youkai, you know? Just because our skin doesn't look different enough for your tastes doesn't mean we aren't different on the inside.

Were your parents both youkai?

I suppose that since we're from different worlds things could have worked differently on yours, it's just...unfamiliar to me.

[undefines]

...I don't know anything about that. Even among youkai, I'm the only one of my kind I've ever heard of.

[reverentresistance]

You don't know where you came from?

...I'm sorry.

[undefines]

Not at all. [And she grins, since the information seems to have stopped Ky short.] I didn't have a name for a long time, either. "Nue" is just what the humans started to call me. "Houjuu" is a title I took for myself.

[And, then, she shrugs, not really seeing the need for condolences.]

Is it really that important to know who your family is? I am what I am. It's not like finding that out is going to change anything about that.

I don't remember my family all that well, but it's still important to know who they were. And certainly I've been surrounded by others like me, and it's people that I understand.

Oh, yeah? And just what makes it so important?

[reverentresistance]

Because it's an important part of who I am. Knowing that I had parents and they loved me...

[At least it's been a comforting line of thoughts, like God's love.]

[She just shrugs.]

Who my parents were doesn't make a difference to me. I'm still myself.

It might not be conscious awareness, but you wouldn't be you without them.
