[Ky studies the Vine for a moment once the feed picks up before she shrugs.]

I suppose that in general it's not a problem if we duplicate each other's work, since we're coming from different angles.

But it seems like some sort of central repository of what people have tried and what they have learned might be helpful. It might seem like a lot of hassle, but it would in effect save a lot of time for everyone.

And more importantly, since I would imagine that most of us have an overabundance of time, it might save some frustration.

[Ky understands paperwork, and imposing a little organization on this situation seems like it would be helpful.]

As well as we could make it clearer to new people what the full situation is, rather than simply sharing our personal experiences.

Anything that you could tell me about working against the magic forces would be appreciated, I think.

Mm, well... I had a run-in with the barrier once, and then trying to mix-and-match the magic here with that from my world. Eheh, it ... didn't really work out either time. [ Subaru looks down, quite embarrassed to admit this, even though it wasn't a secret to anyone by this point. ]

Do you know about the side effects of tampering with things at the far edges of the Gardens?

Only enough in that I know that they exist.

In that case, do you want the long version or the short one?

If it wouldn't be too arduous for you, I would prefer the long version.

[ Subaru takes a deep breath, but shakes her head. ] No, it's no problem.

Let's see... the first thing I tried when I arrived was piercing the barrier that keeps us from going too far into the sky. [ Tilting her head back, she points up, smiling sheepishly. ] It broke, but... only a tiny bit, and then it repaired itself quickly.

For a day after that, I ended up with silver scales instead of skin. It was... kind of uncomfortable, but not harmful in the long run. [ Unless one counts having to cool herself down constantly to keep from overheating because her body was designed to sweat, and the scales made it impossible. ]

Silver...scales? That sounds...

[Ky's eyes widen in a moment of sudden alarm. Had the response been to turn Subaru into some kind of Gear? But she said that they were gone now.]

They just faded after a day?

Yep! It was weird, but that's just the way things happen.

[ Scratching at her cheek. ] The second time, I wasn't as lucky. I switched bodies with my partner and it was...

[ She swallowed hard and ducked her head. ] Well, I don't want to repeat that.

Those are really bizarre.

What did you do the second time?

[ She is quiet a moment. It's beyond embarrassing; it was frightening, being trapped like that. ] I... tried to make up for a magical resource I lacked by using some relics I found a while back.

It backfired really badly.

I see.

[ Ky hesitates, she doesn't wish to make the other woman feel like she's been put on the spot. ]

What is magic like where you come from, if you don't mind me asking?

[ That's for the best, and she does appreciate it. Though now she feels pressure of an entirely different sort. ] Ahah, it's um... it might be hard to describe? I mean, I've never had to compare it to others' before coming here.

Maybe if you could just answer a couple of specific questions?

Does everyone have access to magic on your world? And has it always been present?

[ Shaking her head. ] No, the kind of magic that we're trained in can only be used by someone with the right potential. You're basically born with it, or not, and not everyone discovers that in their lifetime. The principles have changed over time, but the methods have been around since the extinction of the ancient cultures that discovered them.

There are lots of different systems present on the many worlds that the Bureau polices, though, but I couldn't tell you about all of those.

I don't suppose that that would be useful anyway. Thank you for sharing what you know. It works a little differently on my world...all of our magical potential is stored elsewhere and it wasn't until the last two hundred years that we were able to access it.

I can still do magic here, though, which seems a little unusual.

Stored... elsewhere? [ Scratching her cheek. ] I don't get how that works. But if you can still use it, that's good!

Yes. I suppose so.

It isn't as though I have a specific enemy I can fight here however.

...that's good, too, isn't it? [ Subaru thinks on that, eyes sliding downward to her hands. ]

Not when it means no progress can be made.

[ Now hang on a moment. ] Progress can be made without fighting.

In this situation I'm not sure of that.

Mm...

It's not always avoidable, but it's also not always necessary. The Queen doesn't seem the confrontational type, so violence won't be the way to get at the heart of things.

Perhaps if she's not the confrontational type then forcing a confrontation would get more results.

Eheh... [ And Subaru almost can't believe she's the one being cautious here. ] We should be careful with that, since no one knows her true power, except that she can bring so many of us here and maintain this world with strong magic.

She already has ultimate control over us, and toys with us because she wishes to.

Frankly I'm not opposed to making an enemy of her, she's already done her best to make one out of me.
