[ It's the afternoon when Subaru appears on the vine. She is seated on the edge of an open door facing outside the background obviously a traditional Japanese style building that long-term residents will recognize. The young woman is wearing a plain t-shirt and shorts, though she looks like she's been rolling around in the dirt. Her gaze is far away, like she didn't notice the mirror creeping up on her. Truth is, she just forgot about it in the brief few moments it took to coax it into unfurling for her. ]

...ah! Hi there. [ A smile. ] It's Subaru. I've been sort of keeping to myself lately since the incident with the sky pirates so I wanted to apologize to everyone, and see how you're all doing. [ It feels to her like she knows most of the Gardens by now, or has at least casually spoken with them all once or twice. That's almost as good as becoming her friend, in most cases. ]

I wanted to report on what I've been busy with! The roof of the inn is completely restored, now, so no more weird leaks or sudden noise from the wind. I'm also almost done building the swimming pool out back, but I'm still working on a pump and filter so that it won't end up looking like a murky pond after a few weeks, eheh...

[ Then her eyes are downcast, which does not go with her otherwise enthusiastic expression. ] I also... wanted to make a note that all the other rooms here are free, now, except my own. [ She pauses, looking over her shoulder into the building. ] I've been meaning to say something about it, but Vivio has been gone for some time. [ There is a sad smile there for that, but it's hard to tell with her turned away like that. ] I'm sure she's back at home, now, with her two mamas. ... I can't say I know what Suruga Kanbaru has gone home to, but I think it's the same for her. Her room was empty this morning except for the same kind of flower petals I swept away when Vivio disappeared.

[ After another pause, she turns back to the mirror, smiling a little easier even if it is a strain on her. ] So please, feel free to come visit at any time. You won't be a bother to me at all, and you can use any of the facilities here at your convenience. The onsen, the training mats in the corner rooms, the futons... even the kitchen and the ice cream maker! [ A wave. ] I think I'm going to go enjoy a cold treat right now, so I'll see you all later!

Hi, Subaru. I saw that video... I don't know who the people you mentioned are, but I thought maybe you'd appreciate some company.

[After a moment, Itsuki finally notices the state Subaru's in.] You sure look like you're keeping busy.

[ There is a pause in her step as she approaches, but that's the only hesitation. The girl had it right. ] I always appreciate company. After all, this place is just too big for my partner and I.

But someone has to take care of it! So, here I am, eheh.

Partner? [There's a moment of confusion; she said there wasn't anyone else here...?]

This place is definitely huge, though. I can't imagine the cleaning's easy to keep up with. Even for someone of your... demonstrated abilities.

Mm! Partner! [ She could have sworn that she mentioned Mach Caliber before, and there was certainly another woman's voice there earlier, wasn't there? Ah well. It doesn't strike her to mention her again. ]

Aheh, well it doesn't really get that dirty since there are few visitors. Today has been the busiest day in a while, not counting the occasional party or sleepover.

[Itsuki blinks, then shrugs. She'll meet Subaru's partner sooner or later.]

I didn't think I'd see a traditional Japanese inn here, so I was surprised. It's very well-kept, though. I'm surprised it isn't busier, what with you having everything open, and there being an onsen.

I didn't, either! I never got a chance to visit one back on Earth, and this style of architecture isn't common on Mid-Childa at all. Tributes to it, sure... [ The influences are unmistakable in some residences, but not widespread through the main cities — at least, not that she's seen. ] I guess I never thought about it like that. The onsen is definitely the biggest draw, even if not everyone knows all the rules.

Mid-Childa? You're not from Earth, then? [Pulled to some other place, sure she understood that. Pulled to an extradimensional space with travelers from other worlds? That... was a little harder to swallow.] And it has Japanese architectural influence?

[The girl shakes her head.] But no, that much makes sense. I mean, you've got a hot spring in an fantastic garden of maidens. Why wouldn't everyone want to be here? I'm sure there are even more ridiculous things in the Gardens.

Aheh, nope. My dad's family tree runs back to Japan, but that's not where I and my sisters are from. [ Couldn't tell by the Japanese name, most likely, but she doesn't have the typical features one would expect, either. And the hair? That's as natural as it comes for them! ]

We can show you, if you want. Mach Caliber?

[ Subaru lifts a hand and floating just above her upturned palm is one of several holographic displays in the air, displaying photos of one of the main cities back home, the Great Cathedral, and then her dad's house. ] This might not even all that unique to you, depending on what kind of time you're from. [ Well except for the multiple moons in the sky... those stand out to most who've taken a look at the scenic shots. ]

That's where I came from before I ended up here, so... [The girl shrugs.] You don't exactly look Japanese. [The hair isn't so much a tell when your best friends have blue, almost-red, and a light purple. Then again, they're all magical girls, so... trends?]

[She takes a bit to survey the shots, smiling.] Your home world looks very modern. Seems like a nice place... waaaaait. [She actually raises a hand to count from the city shot.] One, two, three... three moons?

Well... that's because my sisters and I are all adopted. [ And there is zero shame in that. Here, it means even less, since it isn't like her mom and dad are around, or even any other relatives. It's just a fact and doesn't allude to anything weird. ]

It is! Mid-Childa is the home world of the Time-Space Administration Bureau. Which... no one here has heard of before, eheh.

[She nods; Subaru's lack of tension on the subject helps.] That would explain it. It sounds like you've got a big family.

Time-Space Administration Bureau? That sounds important... what is it?

[ With a big smile. ] Five sisters and our dad! Cousins, too. [ Which is really the best way to describe the Numbers that did not get outright adopted. ]

[ She dismisses the images. ] The TSAB — I'll just say "Bureau" — monitors the many worlds in the dimensional sea. It's basically a peacekeeping force. Our technology and magic levels are highly advanced, so we try and make sure that others out there don't do dangerous things with that kind of knowledge. I did some work recovering dangerous artifacts, for example, but that's not all the work that's out there.

Huh. That's quite a lot. I'm glad you found happiness, though.

[Itsuki absorbs the information about the Bureau.] Interesting... I'm surprised there's an organization like that out there. Too bad they can't help us with our magical problems...

...Sounds like something to consider, once we get out of here, and I finish up my commitment with my friends back home.

Eheh, well it isn't public knowledge on a lot of worlds for a few reasons. First...

[ A blink. ] Huh. What magical problems?

My world is under attack by the Desert Apostles. Their aim is to turn the world into a desert, and they take people's Heart Flowers to do it. I...

[She stops for a long moment.]

...I don't even know why I'm telling you this. I kept it a secret from everyone back at home, but maybe you and your Bureau can help us somehow, if I ever leave the Gardens. I'd be a lot more worried if my friends were fighting without me out there.

...the whole world? [ Subaru sighs a bit. ] There are already planets like that out there. It would be easier if they just colonized those, eheh...

[ She scratches her head. ] I'm not sure how much help we'd be, because it's really a matter of which Earth you come from, if this place has taught me anything.

But we definitely would, if we were able to! That's just the sort of stuff the Bureau would step in on.

It's not to colonize it, I think. It's to destroy it.

I'm glad you're behind us, though, even if you won't be able to actually help. We... honestly, I think we're in a bit over our heads. I mean, I'm just a middle school student, and here I am with the world on my shoulders.

...For that matter, you're not questioning me when I say that all this is magic with a straight face. I'm not used to that.

[ Subaru chuckles. ] I've been dealing with magic even before I enrolled at the Ground Forces Academy when I was 13. You'd be surprised the kind of stuff I'm used to!

[ Hold the phone, though. ] ...wait, the world on your shoulders? What do you mean by that? Were you fighting back?

Well, what else am I supposed to do? If someone's being attacked in front of me, I'm going to help them however I can. And it's not like we've ever seen anyone else that can fight them, so... it's gotta be us.

[The girl coughs.] Sorry. I just... this means a lot to me. With your work in the Bureau, I think you'd understand, since it sounds like it's essentially the space police.

[ Subaru smiles. ] That's a good mindset but I more meant... how were you fighting? It sounds like these people were really powerful, to be able to have goals like that.

[ She looked up. ] Hmm, "space police" has a nice ring to it. I guess it's sort of like that? [ Better than "space marines". ]

...oops. [Clearly she hadn't wanted to reveal that, but...]

Well, nothing for it now. I have magic too, actually; it's how we stood a chance against them at all. [Itsuki pulls out... looks like an ornate perfume bottle?] It's been hard, but I refuse to give in. We're a team, and the others need me.

[ Subaru looks, her surprise evident. ] Oh, that's — hmm, nevermind. I always ask "is that a Device" but if you don't know about Mid-Childa the answer is probably "no!" [ She chuckles. ] That explains how you were able to stand up like that. A team, though...

You mean like "magical girls"? [ It's not a stretch, given who she's met here. Homura and her friends, specifically, fit that category, and a few others have made the same correlation with Subaru. ]
