[The Vine unfurls to show the following letter:

A minute or so after the letter is sent, the mirror opens to show Akiha's bedroom. The fireplace is roaring and Akiha is sitting on the floor before it. Her knees are pulled up and she has her face buried in her arms, black hair pulled back in a ponytail. If one looks closely, her shoulder's shake every now and then.

Clearly, she's oblivious to the mirror's activation, but the Vine and Akiha never did get along...]

The latter point is most important. We do not always have control here. And you've already made a mistake, so you might make another.

You haven't explained your nature, why you changed, what your powers are in that state, or imparted any knowledge that might be of use to others, or might truly inconvenience you. You've done no public good, haven't even had the courage to address us face to face of your own will.

Painful? To write on a piece of paper? [Kuja, a private person herself, has very little regard for this apology, considering how different her own had been, at home--it's a sore point. She waves a hand, dismissing this with a flicker of pointed fingernails.] A little emotional discomfort is no hardship whatsoever.

I'm under no obligation to bear my soul and prostrate myself before anyone. I will not make the same mistake again, nor am I going to parade around what I am or what powers I possess as that doesn't change; it's the same now as it was then. It is a change in perspective and a loss of compassion or regard for life that is different.

None of us are required to state exactly what we are capable of. Admitting that I had fallen to my heritage is extremely inconveniencing to me. And I don't have to tell you how.

If you wish to start a registry divulging everyone's unique powers and abilities to make yourself feel safe, by all means, go ahead. See how many you can get to tell you everything, if it'll make you sleep better at night. Just make sure to put yourself on it, in case something out of your control turns you into a sadistic monster.

My dear, please don't anger yourself. [Kuja holds up a hand.] This is a mildly stated concern, nothing more. You see, my worry is for the public. I don't believe you need give a full catalog of your powers. That was merely a suggestion as to a gesture you might perform. Actions speak louder than words, do you have that saying in your world?

Bear your soul? Prostrate? Does that equate with a little simple information? No, if you did that, I'd suspect you of self-pity rather than honesty. I didn't say you were required to do anything. I said that perhaps a show of goodwill and trust would go a long way toward making others trust in turn.

As for my part, I am a poet and friend of beasts. Everyone is in danger of being affected by one of the Queen's curses, but that's an entirely different matter.

And I have chosen to offer up the knowledge that this has even happened and that I am responsible for it when instincts would have me stay silent and not say anything. What you suggest are but mere words.

The public can ask me questions if they're really concerned or seek clarification. If they wish me to hand them the information which could very well put me in danger, then they will be waiting. I'm not unfamiliar with the concept of hunters or those that would try to manipulate what I am to their own machinations.

If you did not, I am sure you would have been punished--you know the Queen does punish those who commit violence, do you not? That is one of her rules. Even those who might hunt you would be punished for hunting you.

To provide useful information is a bit more than mere words, even though it takes the form of speech. A teacher's job is speaking, but a teacher does something, does not merely speak. Perhaps you could tell people how to protect, themselves or avoid you in that state, or what precisely went wrong, and why, or what safeguards you have put in place.

I myself have no interest in the Queen's peace or in harming or hunting anyone. I'm not concerned with such prosaic matters. [Another hand-wave.]

However, I am of the public, and you may consider that I have asked.

Very well. [Akiha rubbed the bridge of her nose and looked a bit to the side uncomfortably.]

The mistake I made was I had been stupidly denying myself blood for over two weeks once I learned the truth behind the source of the Lake. This normally isn't that big of a problem, but I failed to take into consideration the stress of recent events. My will was stretched too thin and a moment of violence directed at me was the trigger.

As long as my hair color remains black, no one has anything to fear regarding my heritage. But I can alter it at will so it being red in color is not, in itself, indicative of anything wrong. But if I have inverted, it's seen in the lack of humanity in my eyes and how I tend to prefer my hair red over black.

...I have a willing donor, so I will not fast again.

[Kuja's manner softens.]

Red hair... [Her own color alters to red at times of greatly heightened emotion. At such times, she could destroy a world.]

I see. As I said, I do accept your apology, especially as you realize your mistake and have taken steps to correct it, and this information might be helpful in future, without being harmful to you.

It is your nature, and any of us might be dangerous, under certain circumstances. Why does the source of the lake trouble you so?

I have no wish to drink from that woman. The thought of doing so turns my stomach.

Oh, but we all do here, in a matter of speaking. We all do. The Queen has brought us here to make us dance, and she provides our air, our food, our drink. No matter what it is we drink, we depend on her, you see. Perhaps all those things are of her as well as from her.

There's no way around it in this glittering little cage.

This is far more literal than I am willing to accept, having hosted the woman for tea before.

I mean metaphorically as well. There's no escape. Where do you think any of this food comes from?

If she can provide an entire lake of blood, far greater in volume than all our bodies combined, do you not think it might be true? Perhaps this place is her. Where I am from, worlds themselves are living beings, with hearts and memories, so it's not unheard of.

Why, some say we are not even our true selves, but shadow versions created for the Queen's pleasure.

And where I am from, they are not. I'm not a magus nor a scholar. I'm a businesswoman that deal with the metaphysical as it comes at me for I choose not to dabble in that part of my world outside my own bloodline and those that have felt the need to associate with it.

It's talk like this that I have my magician around for. Regardless, I don't have to like it.

It is very usual for people not to think of things they don't understand, so I'm not particularly surprised by that. I merely mean to make it clear that things may not be as they seem, especially where magic is concerned.

As for magicians--they seldom agree on anything, I've found, especially magicians from different worlds.

I didn't say you had to like it. As a matter of fact, I was pointing it out as an unpleasant possibility.

There's a whole lot of possibilities out there are are absurd and unpleasant. I will deal with those that present themselves to me or I discover on my own.

I prefer not to focus on the 'what ifs' that I can't affect but that which I can.
