[Claire is peering at the Vine outside the library, looking decidedly confused.]

Something a little strange just happened--yes, I know everything here is strange, but...those creatures in the library. Bears, yes? There's a section of it they're guarding, and they wouldn't let me through before. But today they stood aside...

[she turns a little red here.] I don't understand the purpose of those kinds of books. I'm not really sure they teach you anything. But that's not the point--I'm not sure what changed to make the let me by.

[the truth is, her eighteenth birthday has come and gone recently, but she hasn't exactly been tracking time correctly since her first kidnapping, let alone her second.]

If anyone has any ideas--I'd appreciate it.

They tend to pay more attention to what appeals to the author than to what's feasible in reality.

No, no, I think you're quite correct. One can enjoy them as fantasies as long as one doesn't use them to form any expectations about what the, er, real thing will be like.
