[Vitalia is attempting to keep several small potted plants away from a small party of the new robotic overlords (some of whom are carrying the shards of ex-potted plants). This is fairly difficult with only one arm available.]

Oh dear... These automatons certainly do make a nuisance of themselves, don't they? I've lost several specimens to them now! I shan't begrudge anyone their efforts at progress, but I do wish their creator would be a bit more responsible with them. Honestly!

I've overheard some of you saying you could reason with them... Might I request a bit of assistance from you? I'm afraid I've met with no success in my attempts at discourse.

[The robots stare at her for a moment.]

I wonder if, perhaps, a retreat would be in order... I am not equipped to deal with an environment beset by mechanical vermin.

[To the robots.] Leave. Her. Alone.

[To Vitalia.] Alright. I have no idea where we should go, though. Do you have a destination in mind?

[After a moment, they turn to one another and pass the shards they were bearing. They do not seem inclined to leave. Vitalia sighs.] As I said, they simply will not listen to reason!

Perhaps if we moved to another part of the lake? My choice in location was a bit arbitrary; most of the unoccupied perimeter would suit my purposes.

[Zenobia's wing twitches slightly.] Tch. There's got to be something that can be done about them.

Well, lead the way and I'll follow. [Gotta be careful not to drop her "specimens"].

I'm sure if Papi were here, he'd know what to do... [She frowns. Life is a lot more difficult without an all-knowing authority figure!]

[She lifts her skirt modestly and starts out. The robots seem to be more engaged in their pass-the-pot game than in following them at the moment, and they're soon several yards away on an uninhabited stretch of beach. Vitalia sighs and leans against a rock.] My goodness!

[Zenobia gently sets down the pots]. Looks like you're safe until they decide they need to destroy more stuff or whatever. You okay?

Oh yeah, I don't think we had time to introduce ourselves. I'm Zenobia. [Grins].

Yes, I'm unharmed. Thank you so very much for your assistance!

[She curtsies.] I am Vitalia Ruiz Asención. Have you no family name?

Always glad to help a pretty face.

...Family name? What's that?

oh! Oh my... [She blushes slightly, flattered.]

The names of your father and mother? [She looks over the wing on Zenobia's back.] Or... have you no family?

...They're dead. [Human family are, at least. She's not going to mention Xantrich].

But it was a long time ago, when I was a little kid. So no worries or anything.

Oh dear... how difficult that must have been! [Though that still doesn't explain why you didn't keep their names...] I can't imagine having to go through life without Papi to guide me!

I find that if I just keep moving forward, things have a way of working themselves out. It's no big deal, really.

[And, that taken care of, she moves on to much more interesting subjects, reaching toward Zenobia's wing.] This is... part of you, isn't it?

Yeah. [She doesn't draw it away or anything. Vitalia's free to touch it if she wants]. I was born with it.

Born? Not created? [What follows is a good deal of curious touching, poking, and occasional moving of the wing.] How fascinating. Why is there an eye here?

[Zenobia endures the poking and prodding without comment]. Dunno. The eye's always been there. I can't see through it or anything, and it doesn't really do anything.

How very peculiar. I have never seen such a deformity before. And you say you were not created... are you human?

Only half... I'm half-demon. [Zenobia is very curious about how she will react to this.]

Half demon? [She laughs lightly.] How strange! I have never seen a demon in the flesh. I thought they were only imaginary things. You don't seem to act very much like a demon should.

Well, most people haven't seen them, as far as I know. They generally aren't considered pleasant.

No. I don't seem to have inherited the bloodlust and hatred that demons generally seem to possess. But maybe that's not an internal thing. I dunno.

It must be very inconvenient to have no reference for your biology. I'm fortunate Papi knows everything about how I was made.

I've done just fine without... er... knowing my biology.

Wait... made? So when you said I was "born, not created," you mean... someone made you? I don't understand. Did they put you together somehow?

Oh dear... [She puts her hand to her mouth] I'm not really supposed to let people know that... but since you're not human, I suppose it must be all right!

Yes, Papi put me together himself, as well as Mami and my sister. [She pulls her shawl down and shakes her head, letting her gills free.] Ahh... it's so much more comfortable not having to cover up like that.

[Zenobia is shocked]. Wow... you're... quite a piece of work.

[she reaches out and touches the gills] Hmm, what are these?

I'm finding so many amazing people in this place.

Why, thank y- ahahaha! [She twitches away from Zenobia's touch.] Oh dear... forgive me; it's a bit ticklish. These are gills. Papi designed me to be amphibious.

It's fascinating, isn't it? There are so many exciting things to be found here!
