[The Vine shows a woman lounging in the grass. She's on the lean side, green eyed, and crowned with a messy head of vividly red hair. There are marks on her face that might be tattoos: a single scarlet slash under each eye. She looks as if she started to get dressed but grew bored or tired midway through the attempt. She's wearing nothing but a white dress shirt, half-buttoned, a black bra, and black underwear. A cat with a scroll in its mouth is pawing at her as she yells at the trees, probably not for the first time.]

Hey, Rude! You there? Come on.

[She sighs, impatiently. Maybe she should actually go look for whoever she's calling for, but she doesn't stir. That would be too much effort. The cat is insistent, and she turns toward it instead.] Get lost, kitty. I already read that. Last thing I need is cats telling me what to do.

[Yet she doesn't seem too bothered, and when the cat starts batting her hand, she bats back, playfully. When she finally notices the mirror, she cocks her head at it, then leans forward and taps it. She makes a face in it, experimentally, then sticks her tongue out at it.]

Is this a joke? It's not fucking funny. [Wait. If it were a prank, it would actually be an awesome one.] Heh. Maybe it's a little funny.

This would have to happen on my day off. So, what's up, plant mirror thing?

Could be I received some misinformation. What's your take on the reason we're here?

Your kind? What does that mean? [Reno's cautious, but not overtly suspicious. If it's just a race of people with eyes like that, maybe it's no big deal.]

As for why we're here, I don't know. Asking the Queen may help you decide, but she's unstable.

A hybrid what? [It might be a rude question, but her tone isn't hostile so much as insistent.]

Personally, I prefer to avoid talking to unstable, powerful people. I try to take a month off after every time I do it, and it's only been a week for me.

Part human, part yoma. Yoma are monsters that eat the entrails of humans.

Ah. Then you may wish to avoid her for now.

Entrail eating monsters. Sounds great. [The sarcasm is palpable.] How's that working out for you? [A pause.] You eat entrails, too?

Yeah, too bad I showed up here just when I was trying to swear off psychos. Must be my lucky day.

[A vague look of distaste.] Of course not. I was made the way I am to destroy yoma.

Unfortunately there's no way out, so you'll have to accept the possibility of meeting her.

Good. Just checking. There was this fucked up hybrid in my world. He tried to kill everybody, so I don't have a lot of good experiences with things like that.

[Pause.] You don't turn into a monster, do you? Cause that's what happened where I'm from. [Reno is slow to accept monsters and generally does not think human + creepy monster = good idea.]

If I meet her, I meet her. I'm not too worried about it, I'm just not in a rush to kiss her hand or something.

I don't intend to kill anyone.

What exactly did the hybrid in your world do?

Glad to hear it. Sorry, I don't think putting together monsters and humans to make more powerful monsters to kill the monsters sounds like the brightest fucking idea.

They made him to fight their battles for them, like what you were talking about. Then one day he went crazy and turned into a full-on monster, tried to destroy the world. Came pretty close, too.

Perhaps because it isn't.

That sounds... [A bit familiar? Minus the destruction of the world.] He wasn't successful?

Yeah, I figured. Well, if you got screwed over, I feel for you, man. That shit's not right.

No, or I wouldn't be here talking to you--the scientists who were messing with monsters accidentally did something decent and made another guy who was kind of a weird, failed experiment, and he killed the first guy.

Had to kill him three times, but I think he's finally dead for good.

It's fine--I can't change the past. Things have worked out for the best.

He killed him, even though he was weaker?

[She nods.] No point worrying about shit you can't change.

It's a long story. He got stronger, and some other people helped him out. Including yours truly. [That's maybe not completely true, but close enough.]

Then it was accomplished with teamwork?

You could put it like that. [She's all too happy to give herself more credit and Cloud less.] We did work together to kick his ass.

Hm.

There aren't many dangers here, so you shouldn't need to worry about that.

I can handle myself. I'm not worried.

So what do you do for fun around here, Clare?

So you train all day, every day? You've gotta do something else, right?

There's little else that's worthwhile.

What do you usually do back home? Besides stopping monsters from eating people's guts, I mean.

... That is what I do. [Taking time off? That's for normal people.]

Whoa, seriously? You can't let your job take over your life like that. I bet there's not even any of those gut-eaters here. [Clare said there weren't many dangers, so it's an easy conclusion to reach.]

[Reno's natural desire to bother serious people has overcome her distrust of monsters, for the moment.] You should hang out with me. I'll show you how to have fun.
