1st Mission

[The Vine shows a woman lounging in the grass. She's on the lean side, green eyed, and crowned with a messy head of vividly red hair. There are marks on her face that might be tattoos: a single scarlet slash under each eye. She looks as if she started to get dressed but grew bored or tired midway through the attempt. She's wearing nothing but a white dress shirt, half-buttoned, a black bra, and black underwear. A cat with a scroll in its mouth is pawing at her as she yells at the trees, probably not for the first time.]

Hey, Rude! You there? Come on.

[She sighs, impatiently. Maybe she should actually go look for whoever she's calling for, but she doesn't stir. That would be too much effort. The cat is insistent, and she turns toward it instead.] Get lost, kitty. I already read that. Last thing I need is cats telling me what to do.

[Yet she doesn't seem too bothered, and when the cat starts batting her hand, she bats back, playfully. When she finally notices the mirror, she cocks her head at it, then leans forward and taps it. She makes a face in it, experimentally, then sticks her tongue out at it.]

Is this a joke? It's not fucking funny. [Wait. If it were a prank, it would actually be an awesome one.] Heh. Maybe it's a little funny.

This would have to happen on my day off. So, what's up, plant mirror thing?

[She's taken aback, but in her experience, keeping a (mostly/apparently) cool head is essential when considering even the most emotional matter. This Reno has her strengths, but she doubts that a command of even the basic theories of physics is among them.]

I see. I'm so very sorry, I truly am. But. There are no absolutes in this situation. Given that there are multiple universes, there must by multiple outcomes arising from the same basic set of variables. What I mean is, what you've described isn't necessarily going to happen in her world or in mine, simply because it happened in yours. You're not actually from "the" future, Reno. You're simply from "a" future.

[She sighs, feeling a little disheartened. White Nightmare indeed. The Sephiroth she knows takes hi- her duty so seriously. Such a thing could never happen. Could it?]

I don't mean to sound so-- clinical. It's actually quite saddening to know that those things could happen to people and places I know well, even if I don't know them as myself.

[Looking as beleaguered as only an executive used to having her opinion discounted can, Reeve squares her shoulders and carries on. Chuckling ruefully, She puts up her hands, as if to forestall further argument.]

All right, Reno. Consider your dire portents heard! I suppose in the end we'll never know who is right, which is probably for the best. At any rate, nothing bad seems likely to happen here-- at least not anything that Sephiroth is capable of doing. The Queen has powers that seem to trump even the most powerful among us.
I don't know what I'll do if someone else I know but don't know appears in this place!

She smiles, running a hand through her hair. Well, you seem like yourself. Apart from the obvious fact of your being a woman, of course.

[Reeve has heard that tone of voice before, but never directed at her. Turks. She supposes they're the same in any universe. Ruthless. She feels what she estimates is the appropriate amount of apprehension. But she's never let apprehension dictate her actions, and she won't start now.]

Yes well, my funeral isn't at issue here-- at the moment at least. In any case, I can't see what harm it would do to tell her that I know you in my existence. I'd rather not lie to her any more than I have to-- and I've already had to.
It's not as if she would know you at all! You'd be a neutral party to her-- for the most part.

[She's taken aback to such an extent that she actually laughs. Briefly. And it's more like a single "Ha!" than anything else. It's true. She doesn't stick at lying when she's feels it's necessary. Which seems to be the case more and more these days, unfortunately.]

Well. I don't know about that, Reno. But-- and I say this with reservations, I do see your point. I don't particularly like it, but I do see it. I'd also rather you didn't discuss some of the matters you've been hashing out with me with her, so maybe it would be best.

Very well! Your secret is safe with me. At least for the time being. So, yes. We have an understanding, Reno.
