[Anna withdraws her hand from the mirror before her, then folds her arms and nods. She takes a paper plate with fishbones on it and heads for her flower.]

I got the ANIMa working. My hypothesis was correct - any psionic brain will work as the catalyst, and the monsters here with telepathic blasts weren't exactly a match for a bitch with a pistol.

Without an Anchor, I can't actually enter the machine safely, but it is picking up and intensifying my psychic resonance when I wear my Cap, and it is picking up my connections to all of my female allies back home. I'm not happy that it's just them - motherly love makes an AMAZING weapon in this - but it's enough.

[She pauses to snap some bones off of her fish and push them into the soil near her flower and the Vine]

So I'm going to need a psychic Anchor at some point to put this thing through it's paces properly. Actual psychic ability isn't actually needed, just a gift for dream interpretation and practical psychology. And a close friendship and trust, of course - my relationship to my Anchor will form the chassis of this thing.

By the way, the flowers and the Vine seem to like using fish bones and scraps for fertilizer. Just thought I'd mention it.

[ Caprica has to pause a minute just to make sense of what Anna's saying. And even when she thinks she's got it... it still doesn't make much sense, and her tone of voice and expression are both clearly confused. ]

You're saying you can make weapons... out of relationships. Emotions.

That is exactly what I am saying. I'm an ANIMa Pilot, a psychonaut. The motto of my unit was "Love is our weapon."

That's... [ She chooses her words carefully, so as not to sound judgmental at all. ] We don't have anything like that in my world.

I figured it wasn't a common technique. We juryrigged these things as a weapon of last resort against a foe that... well, physical weaponry was ineffective against them.

I can imagine that would make things difficult.

[ The reply is automatic, really. She can't imagine an enemy that wouldn't be vulnerable to physical attacks — even a Cylon Centurion can be destroyed with armor-piercing rounds. ]

A method of healing and strengthening minds, though dialog.

You can do that just by talking?

[that's news to her.]

And you use your mind to fight...so I guess that would mean it has to be strong. Is there...anything I could do to help?

[Anna shook her head, smiling.]

Not that you haven't already done.

[And something occurs to her, and she frowns.]

...If I'm ever being unusually rude to you, that's probably just battle damage from this thing. It'll fade, and I apologize in advance.

[she probably wouldn't notice unless you called her a "thing" or something.]

"Damage"? You mean like your mind getting hurt?

[Ouch. Childlike metaphors were always too damn accurate.]

Oh. But if it goes away eventually, that's good. Does that "psychology" stuff help it heal, too? Like Cure spells?

Probably not as instantaneous, most of the time, but yeah, that's the idea.

[she nods her understanding.]

What do you fight with your weapon?

Nightmares. Creatures that pretend to be that shadows of our own souls to tear us apart and eat our fear.

You know, charming critters like that.

There are things like that in this place?

No. But there were at home, and there are monsters here, if different ones. That's what I'll face here.

So you can fight regular monsters, too...

I hope nothing like those caves ever happens again...but I guess we can't be sure.

I would rather hope to defeat them than hope they won't attack. The first is easier to ensure.

[she nods.]

[Tifa looks perplexed, and her words are hesitant.] I'm...not sure what you mean. Your relationships with people give you weaponry? How?

This machine is a psychic amplifier. A relationship is a very real thing in the Dream back home, one of the few things with substance in that world. It amplifies and shapes the psychic energy of an emotionally charged relationship.

You... used a monster's brain?

I stick with what's been proven to work, yes.

Why?

Back home, it required the brain of one of the Nightmares to work, suspended in artificial amniotic fluid so it would maintain physical form. I realized that the only needed component was a psionic creature's brain - a Nightmare was useful but unneeded.

Or is that what you were asking?

So you hunted down one of the monsters in the caves? And why do you need a weapon here anyway?

The monsters that have proven hostile to us, you mean? Creatures of the Wastes?

I need a weapon in case they get more feisty or things intrude on here from the Wild. I will not use it lightly.

Wastes? I thought the monsters only attacked if you went in the caves.

There have been other incidents where we have been attacked by hostile entities, like the blizzard two months ago.

It's better to assume that there are and prepare for it and be wrong, than assume that there aren't and be proven wrong.

I've never lived in a place with monsters before. It's easier for me to assume that there aren't.

And who can blame you? A world where you don't need to assume that is a better world than this.

I blame myself. I'm in this world now, I should learn.

Any emotion tied to a relationship, really, the more intense the better. We focus on love and friendship because it's more stable, forms more reliable weaponry.

And these weapons can be used in the physical world as well?

They exist on both the symbolic and physical planes at the same time, yes.

I've never heard of things manifesting quite like that before. Could anyone on your world do this?

Could anyone on your world become a soldier, miss?

Only if they're physically able.

It's similar with the ANIMa. It requires training and conditioning. Theoretically, anyone could pilot one. Theoretically, anyone could be a soldier.

Those sorts of abilities... you have to be born with them, in my world. Except for rare cases.

If we were manifesting them on our own, I could see that. But keep in mind this is an amplifier for natural power.

An amplifier... I wonder how it would work for someone already very powerful, then.

Christ weeps to think on it... but no. It's more likely that they would be able to manifest while awake. THAT'S fairly terrifying.

But stronger. And strength is important, in a war.
